The Difference Between GAD and Panic Disorder

Back to Main Article Page

Generalized anxiety disorder and Panic disorder are both categories under the anxiety disorder umbrella. They are both disorders that deal with some kind of misconfiguration in the mind of the person when it comes to dealing with stress and anxiety. Normally people deal with anxiety on a daily basis. Anxiety helps us when we have to do stressful things by making us think faster and focus on our task at hand. Sure it's stressful, but it increases our output abilities.

People with generalized anxiety disorder tend to feel that anxiety feeling to rush and be worried all the time. That feeling we get when we have a big test or a kit if work to do at the job is around all the time. This can be very stressful and force the person to take medication to reach a normal level of every day activity. This disorder keeps some people indoors all the time because they worry about what could be outside. They are more afraid of every day occurrences and are also easily startled.

Panic disorder is similar but with episodes of extreme fear and anxiety. These events cause increased heart beat, dizziness, numbness, trembling, and more. When a person has a panic attack they think they suffered a heart attack. They feel the attacks are embarrassing and some suffers stop leaving their home. They fear every day activities and have panic attacks at seemingly random moments.

These disorders seem different but they really are the same and require similar treatment.
